What looks like a very promising read (look at that cool cover!) turned out to be a bit of disappointment. Blood of the Shinobi, written and drawn by Pol Medina Jr. lacks focus and characterization that made his previous work Pugad Baboy so endearing to its readers, and instead finds an excuse to creatively feed a forced commentary about certain issues in the Philippines.
Blood of the Shinobi's story is all over the place. Here we see Maia, the worlds most unlikable teenager student protagonist in an all-girls school (hmmmm) where she battles against one-dimensional sorority members and hangs out a brutish African-American girl. We see her in a makeshift shelters helping the homeless by giving them drugs (I think?). We see a vigilante Maia tracking down rapists. We see her as a tattoo artist, a snob daughter, a trained martial artist, a shinobi.
